THE QUARELLA SANDSTONE OF THE BRIDGEND AREA.

Monday, July 11th 2016.

10. 30am

Leader:  John Davies.

This field trip is a little different to normal in that we will be studying a specific but important building stone - The Quarella  Sandstone. We will visit several quarrying sites and nearby buildings, including churches at Pyle and Maudlam, which have used the stone at   Pyle, Stormy Down and Wildmill, Bridgend. This will involve a series of short walks and driving between the various locations.

We meet on the main road, A48 adjacent to Pyle Church which is a few hundred yards north of the traffic lights at Pyle Cross.

Grid ref. O.S. Sheet no. 170   SS 826 827

Pyle Cross is located just west of Kenfig Hill and approximately 1 mile due north of junction 37 on the M4 motorway.

Please bring waterproof clothing, good walking boots. Lunch will be available at the Angel Inn Maudlam which is adjacent to Maudlam Church, one of the sites we will be visiting or else bring a packed lunch.

Field Trips Only

Members are reminded that they attend field trips at their own risk and to take all necessary precautions e. g. stout walking boots, warm waterproof clothing, hard hats when required, goggles and a walking stick or poles.  The group must stay together and anyone wishing to leave early must inform the field co-ordinator i.e. Nigel or Brian.
